米Microsoftは18日、Internet Explorer 7（IE7）の正式版をリリースした。IE6がリリースされたのが2001年なので、なんと5年ぶりのメジャーバージョンアップだ。

Mac OS X で Safari を利用している僕にとってIE7のリリースはそれほどニュースではないが、興味があるのが JavaScript の動作パフォーマンスである。
ご存知の通り Ajax にて JavaScript が多用される最近のインターネットサービスや Webアプリケーションではブラウザにて Script が実行されることから、ブラウザの性能がユーザーインターフェースを左右する。特にIE6の JavaScript の動作性能は、不評だったようである。

バリバリ Ajax の Zimbra Collaboration Suite は、IE6の JavaScript のパフォーマンスに悩まされれており、これまで IE の性能改善を Microsoft の IE team に訴えかけてきた。
今回の IE7 リリースにより IE のメモリ管理が改善され、JavaScript の性能が向上。なんと2倍のパフォーマンスが出た旨のテストレポートが Zimbra から公表された。
