Red Hat Launches Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Linux moves closer to displacing Solaris in the enterprise. 米国Red Hat社は2月15日にエンタープライズ向けの商用 Linux ディストリビューションである Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 を発表。世界各国１５の言語で出荷しました。
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3からの改善点は
・Linux 2.6 kernel のサポート
・デスクトップ環境の改善
・企業向けOSとしてのセキュリティー強化
・パフォーマンスとスケーラビリティーの強化（32ビットー64ビット双方に）
対応ハードウェアアーキテクチャは、従来のx86に加えて, 64-bit Intel Xeon, Itanium, AMD64, IBM POWERz-Series and S/390。

MultiVNC
株式会社アルファシステムズは、IT 教育向けデスクトップ管理ツール「MultiVNC」（以下「MultiVNC」という）の開発を完了し、GPL（GNU Public License: 一般公有使用許諾書）に基づいたオープンソースソフトウェアとして2005 年2 月７日よりバージョン1.0 として正式リリースいたしました。
VNC（Virtual Network Computing)は、英国のAT＆T 研究所が開発し、フリーソフトウェアとして無償で配布されており、現在はいくつかの機能拡張が施された派生版もあります。
VNCは、他のパソコンの画面をネットワーク経由で遠隔操作するソフトウェアのことである。マルチプラットフォーム、マルチプロトコルに対応しているため、Windows やUnix、Linux などOS の異なる場合の遠隔操作が可能です。
現在オフィスのLinuxデスクトップ環境で純正VNCを利用していますが、MultiVNCに乗り換えてみます。
SELinuxのユーザー会が発足
「日本SELinuxユーザ会準備委員会」の設立後，メーリングリストの移転や「SELinuxナイト」の開催を通じて，ユーザ会正式設立の準備を進めて参りましたが，「日本SELinuxユーザ会」正式設立をアナウンスします。
２月７日に日本SELinuxのユーザー会が発足。
SELinux(Security-Enhanced Linux)とは、米国の NSA （National Security Agency）が中心になって開発した Linux カーネルの セキュリティ拡張モジュールのこと。
SELinuxではLinux OSの弱点を解消しています。root権限を排除し、プロセス･ユーザに必要最小限の権限を割り当てることができるようになっています。これにより、たとえ侵入を許しても、攻撃者は大きな権限を得ることができず悪事を行うことができません。
Fedora Core3 に本格的に導入されました。

SUSE LINUX 国内販売
2004年6月1日より企業とコンシューマの両方に向けてSUSE LINUXの出荷を始める。企業向けには（1）クライアント向けの「SUSE LINUX Desktop 1」，（2）ファイル/メール/Webサーバー機能などを搭載したワークグループ向けの「SUSE LINUX Standard Server 8」，（3）64ビットCPUやクラスタリング構成などに対応した基幹システム向けの「SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server」を提供する。価格はオープンだが，Desktop 1が5ライセンスで6万1000円程度，Standard Serverが4万8000円程度，Enterprise Serverが11万円程度になる見込み（すべて税抜きの価格。1年の無償アップデート/セキュリティ・パッチ提供が付属）。
SUSE LINUX いよいよ国内販売開始です。エンタープライズ向けの Linux ディストリビューションとして Redhat Lunux ES/AS, Turbolinux 8 Server と真っ向勝負を挑む模様。

ライブドア、turbolinux を得る
株式会社ライブドア（代表取締役社長 兼 最高経営責任者 堀江 貴文 東京都新宿区：証券コード4753）は、本日の当社取締役会において、株式交換によりターボリナックス株式会社を完全子会社とすることを決定し、株式交換契約書を締結いたしましたので、下記のとおりお知らせいたします。
なんと、ライブドアがターボリナックスを買収した。1:0.60153 の株式交換。ここ最近 SRA 、ターボリナックス、ライブドアのキーマンと個別にお付き合いをしていたため、驚きのニュースであった。
ターボリナックスは2002年8月に SRA が米国 Turbolinux, Inc. から 100%株式を取得したばかりであったが、早々と売却といったところ。
これによりライブドアは日本市場において Lindows と turbolinux という２つの Linux ディストリビューションを手に収めたことになる。

Lin---s ベネルクスで営業停止
Lindows.comは3月12日、オランダ、ベルギー、ルクセンブルクでの営業を中止したことを明らかにした。ベネルクス3国向けのサイト「Lin---s.com」には現在、係争中の訴訟のためベネルクス3国からの訪問者によるアクセス、製品の購入は許可されていないと記されている。同社は1月にオランダの裁判所からLindowsの名称を使った営業を禁じる命令を言い渡されたことを受け、2月17日に同サイトを立ち上げた。 from ITMedia
以前この Blog でも オランダ、ベルギー、ルクセンブルクでの Lindows 訴訟問題について取り上げたが、Lindows -> Lin---s -> 営業停止。とんだ茶番劇でした。

昨年末に鳴り物入りでリリースされた Linux カーネル2.6 が企業向けのディストリビューションに本格的に採用される。
企業向けのディストリビューションは 2.6 カーネルリリース後マイナーアップデートを見守ってきたが、karnel org から 3月11日にカーネル 2.6.4 がリリースされ、安定性が増してきている。
企業向けのディストリビューションは安定性を重視することから、これまではカーネール2.6 を採用するディストリビューションは Turbolinux 10 Desktop ぐらいであった。Red Hat は オープンソースコミュニティーの Fedora でのカーネル2.6 の状況をフィードバックし、Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 をこの夏リリースする予定である。一方、企業向けディストリビューションで Red Hat を追撃している、独SuSEも春から夏にかけて、SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 をリリースする予定。
カーネル2.4 からの改良点は以下の通りである。
・マルチプロセッサシステム対応の強化
・マルチスレッド対応の強化
・ネットワーク関連の改良
・ファイルI/Oの効率化
・アドレス空間・メモリ管理の改良
カーネル 2.6の Linux Server が WWW をはじめとするインターネットにもたらす功績は極めて大きい。

XFree86 Project, Inc. は 2月29日に「XFree86 4.4.0」をリリースした。v4.x系で7回目のフルリリースであり、前回の 4.3.0 から数えて約1年ぶりのバージョンアップ。
主要変更点なのかでも気になるのが、Darwin/Mac OS X 用Xサーバ(XDarwin)の機能向上。Panther に含まれるライブラリ(libXplugin)を利用したルートレスモードの高速化や、2Dグ ラフィックス描画のパフォーマンスアップが図られたこと。また、今回のリリースからはライセンスが変更された模様。

Novell, Linux で再び踊れるか
During the next two to three years, I quite like the prospects for appreciation in Novell’s stock price, but I'd be inclined to stay on the sidelines for the next few months before thinking about starting a position. While I expect Red Hat to remain the sector leader, its dominant position will be eroded as strong competitors such as Novell/SUSE enter and consolidate in the space. Novell といえば、ネットワークOSの草分け的存在であり、ネットワーク機能の貧弱なMS-DOSに強力なネットワーク環境を提供したことからパソコンLAN市場に浸透したあの Netware を想像する方はかなりのキャリアの方。
昨年独の Linux ディストリビューターである SUSE を買収した現在、Novell は Linux のフィールドで正々堂々とプレイする事になりそうだ。 企業向けの商用サービスで利用される Linux ディストリビューションとして Red hat 社が Enterprise マーケットにフォーカスしたため、SUSE と真っ向対決を強いられる。株価はどう出るか。。

Lindowsに差し止め命令
The company, which sells a version of the Linux operating system intended to mimic Microsoft's Windows, acknowledged Friday that a Dutch judge had ruled against the company in a Microsoft case claiming the Lindows name infringes on Microsoft's Windows trademark.A judge in Amsterdam District Court issued a preliminary injunction barring the company from selling or advertising any products under the Lindows name in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Courts in Finland and Sweden have issued similar injunctions.
MicrosoftがLinuxディストリビューターのLindows.comを相手取り、Windowsの商標
権を侵害されたと訴えている訴訟で、オランダ・アムステルダム地裁の判事が
